AEA’s experienced trainers offer a wide variety of technical training opportunities for weatherization staff, boiler contractors, property managers, building superintendents, energy auditors, heating system designers and other energy professionals interested in learning more about how to improve energy efficiency and overall performance of multifamily buildings.AEA is an Affiliate of the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and offers a series of training programs which prepare students for several BPI certifications. AEA is also a New York State supported Weatherization Training Center.
The AEA Energy Management Training Center located in the Bronx, provides an excellent resource for building management and energy professionals interested in gaining technical expertise in energy management. The AEA Training Center facility offers hands-on training opportunities, housing a boiler lab with two functioning boilers, a wireless building control lab, and several classrooms equipped with digital video, internet access and computer presentation capabilities. The Center is also a showcase and training facility for advanced building controls and renewable technology. For more information about the Center, click (here). Weatherization Training
In collaboration with the NYS Division of Housing & Community Renewal, each year AEA offers a schedule of classes to employees of weatherization subgrantees and its subcontractors. AEA's Training Department develops there courses in response to the needs identified by weatherization agency staff and DHCR field representatives. The schedule for the summer and fall 2007 classes will be posted in May 2007. Participation in these courses is limited to weatherization staff or subcontractors working in the weatherization program. TRAINING PREPARING FOR BPI CERTIFICATION
The following training courses offered by AEA also prepare students for BPI certification
Energy Efficient Building Operations Specialist*
The Energy Efficient Building Operations Specialist (EEBOPS) course is offered for building personnel facing challenges of keeping costs down while energy prices are rising. Building staff make decisions daily that directly affect the comfort and safety of residents, and the bottom line. The EEBOPS training course assists personnel eliminate much of the guesswork of managing building performances for energy efficiency. Even the most experienced building operators and facility managers will learn new best practices that will provide immediate benefits and real cost savings. Completion of the Building Operations Specialist course is a requirement for multifamily building superintendents in projects in NYSERDA's Assisted Multifamily Program and buildings undergoing weatherization through the NYS Weatherization Assistance Program. This course also prepares students for this BPI certification.

Multifamily Building Analyst*
The Multifamily Building Analyst curriculum was developed by AEA with the support of NYSERDA and based upon the national standards developed by an expert panel convened by BPI. The course prepares experienced energy auditors and building analysts for certification as a Multifamily Building Analyst.

Hydronic Heating System Designer*
In collaboration with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Building Performance Institute (BPI), AEA has developed a training program to educate contractors, engineers, and architects who wish to design energy efficient, hydronic heating systems for multifamily buildings. This training is intended to provide professional responsible for replacing multifamily heating systems with the necessary understanding of steam and hydronic system operation, components, sizing, system design, specification preparation, and quality assurance.

Small Home Trainings (Building Analyst & Envelope Specialist)*
Building Analyst
As a BPI Affiliate and one of the Learning Centers in Hudson Valley Community College statewide network supported by NYSERDA, AEA provides this training to prepare students for BPI Certification as a Building Analyst. Home Performance Contractors in New York are required to have staff with this certification in order to become accredited by BPI and approved for participation in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program.
The trainings consists of an overview of building science fundamentals, analysis of diagnostic equipment, assessment of building tightness and practical application of “blower door,” combustion safety and other diagnostics for assessing air leakage and efficiency in buildings. The BPI written test is given at the end of the Training. Completion of certification also requires the successful completion of the BPI Field Test. As a BPI Affiliate, AEA can schedule and Proctor the BPI Field exam as well.
Envelope Specialist
This training includes both classroom sessions and field experience that assists trainees in preparing for BPI’s written and filed exams. Training includes a review of some Building Analyst I topics, but is not a preparatory course. Qualifying candidates may make special arrangements with BPI to take both tests simultaneously. The trainings consists of an overview of Health and Safety, Indoor Air Quality Assessment, Advanced Blower Door Applications, Insulation Techniques & Applications and other topics related to improving building envelope efficiency.

OTHER AEA TRAINING
NYC Housing Preservation & Development's Housing Education Program*
AEA delivers training under a contract with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Developments' (HPD) Housing Education Services (HES), which offers courses in housing management and maintenance for owners, property managers, maintenance staff, contractors and tenants. Some of these courses, which do not require a pre-requisite, include:
Water and Energy Conservation (sponsored and co-delivered with the Department of Environmental Protection), covering how to save water and money, new water regulations and procedures, DEP water audits, and water-metering;
Heat and Hot Water, for property managers and building operators interested in how a heating plant works, how to conserve fuel, and boiler controls;
Building Maintenance for Youth, offering both theory and hands-on experience for youth between the ages of 17 and 25 interested in exploring a career in construction for building maintenance;
Owner's Training, geared towards helping owners increase their cash flow and preserve their buildings through sound management strategies;
Environmental Health for Owners/Managers provides information on common environmental hazards found in the home, with an emphasis on those that affect the health of children.

Local 32 BJ (Heating Trainings I,II,III)*
This training program is sponsored by SEIU Local 32 BJ and offered to its members. AEA Trainers conduct this training at the AEA Energy Management Training Center in the Bronx. Heating I and Heating II are each 11 session, 33 instructional hour courses designed to help prepare building staff to advance in their careers in building operations. These courses are offered by AEA in the fall and spring each year.

Urban Homesteading Assistance Board
The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is a New York City based non-profit providing technical support to low income housing cooperatives. UHAB commissioned AEA to provide trainings specially designed to meet the needs of their membership base. A natural fit, AEA has delivered water and energy efficiency trainings for both UHAB staff and the buildings they serve.
